Been trying to track down a lighting problem on my 2001 XR400 and am being hindered by having to run the engine as theres no battery on this model.

Has anyone worked out how/where to attach a battery (which spec?)to the to allow the lighting circuit etc to be powered up without running the engine?

Any assistance gratefully recieved !!

You don't want no heavy battery unless your missing a right leg and need an electric starter. None the less, the electrical system on the XR400 is pretty simple, so just describe your issue and we'll do our best to help you out.

the problem is that the brake light is on the whole time - top suspect is dirt in the switch but not yet proven...

suggestions/advice gratefully recieved!

Since you live in the UK I assume you have a UK model XR. And I assume it came stock with the brake lighting system? What kind of brake switch does it use? The kind that mounts below the banjo fitting on the master cylinder? Did it start this all of a sudden or did you aquire this problem when you got the bike? Do you have access to a wiring schematic for it?

I'd be tracing down/looking at all the wiring for damaged places in the insulation from being rubbed against the frame or something and grounding out. Next, remove and clean all points of frame ground for the wiring. Next, I'd try replacing the switch.

Does it actually have a brake light switch? I'm not trying to question your knowlege about your bike,(obviously only YOU know for sure) but the tail marker lamp on an XR 400 burns constantly whenever the engine is running. It doesn't change brightness intensity when you step on the brake. It is commonly mistaken for a brake light...so if this is your case don't feel bad.

However,

If it DOES have a brake light switch attached to the rear brake pedal or front brake lever,(like a dual sport conversion) what happens when you unplug it? If it goes out or changes brightness level, then it is the switch. Switches "complete" circuits, either on the voltage or ground side of a load device.(in this case a bulb) In other words they connect the "power"+ or "ground"- to a component. In order to have a tail marker lamp and a brake light, you have to have 2 separate circuits and a dual filiment bulb.

Trailryder brought up a good point also. If the switch is on the "ground" side of the circuit, and the wire is grounded(damaged insulation) somewhere between the bulb and the switch, the circuit is completed, and the switch may not be the culprit. If the switch is on the voltage side and a wire short circuits, the bulb wouln't burn, because the voltage isn't reaching the bulb.

Here is a very crude illustration:

1. +12V]---(wire)---[/_switch]---(wire)---[bulb]---wire---|(-ground)

2. +12V]---(wire)---[bulb]---(wire)---[/_switch]---wire---|(-ground)

Hope I haven't confused you too bad....electrical problems are what I have to do everyday.

Good luck,

My bike is a UK 01 model and came supplied with brake light switches front and rear, which both worked 'as normal' until recently.
The tail light is only illuminated when the lights are on.
It sounds like a 'stuck' switch to me but I haven't found the time yet to finish my investigations - hope to get to it in the next couple of days.
Thanks for the advice ion the meantime.

I've a xr400r1, on UK spec bikes lights are switch operated. The brake light switch is the problem, a replacment is reasonable priced.I spray
wd40 on the thing after every ride, or spend a few £'s more and fit a hydraulic one.

either switch just grounds the circuit to illuminate the lamp.. unplug each switch and see if it goes out. a short anywhere along the wiring could also do it

don't you hate it when your post get modified on forums without your input?

Have you checked out the switch connected to the front brake lever? these are usualy fitted to newer bikes and cause most of the problems. Just disconnect it and see what happens.
