I changed the oil on my 2002 XR250R and the capacity, with a filter change, came to about 2.8 liters. The shop manual states 1.4 liters as "engine oil capacity".

I know a lot of oil is in the frame, but I would think Honda would say how much oil is needed to completely change it. Am I missing something here?

Dirt_Boy77 - as often as you change your oil on your 250, you've gotta be the expert!

Stu yes I do change my oil alot so I know pretty much the exact amount of oil my bike will hold...problem is you have a 96-up 250 and I have a pre 95 250,My bike is a Wet-Sump design where as yours is a Dry-Sump. In other words my bike doesn't hold oil in the frame but only in the crankcase. I wish I could help you but I have no exprience with the 96-up 250s.......Mustang you want to chime in. Matt

There is no way you should have put 2.8 liters of oil in that bike. The XR400 only holds about 2 liters. The amount of oil Honda states is needed to change the oil is usually quite accurate.

my 1999 XR250R manual says that you should only put in 1.4 L or 1.5 US quarts no more than 1.8 is my guess..

Put in 1.4 liters, then let your bike run for 5 minutes. Then check your oil. I did the same thing. If you run it with too much oil, it will start running up your breather tube.

You mentioned something that may be key to the discrepancy - let the engine idle for 5 minutes (just like the manual says when it's warm out). I only let it idle about a minute. I have my doubts that that would account for a 100% difference in capacity, but I'll soon find out (it's currently in my living room for modification) once I take it outside and let it idle for 5-10 minutes.

Yes, I know it says only 1.4 liters/quarts. But when I get that much into my machine, it sometimes doesn't even read on the dipstick. I usually end up with closer to two quarts in my 250. Yes, it does blow out of the breather tube sometimes, but remember that the frame is our oil cooler, you want some oil in the frame to get cooled down. Over 2 liters/quarts is definitely too much, so I would drain a bit out. Then go for a short ride around the block a couple of times. Then come to a stop with the engine running, unscrew your dipstick almost all the way out, shutdown the engine, and then check the oil right away. That will give you a more accurate reading. The whole procedure is a bit flaky at best IMHO, so don't get hung up on an accurate reading.

When filling, pour in the first quart, slow down the pouring rate towards the end of the first quart, then start the engine for a minute or so, shutdown, and pour in the remainder of your 1.8 total quarts/liters. Then you know you have the correct amount and you don't need to measure, just start up and check for leaks.

Hey Stu,
I have a 96 XR250. Oil and filter change I use 2 qts.
Warm it up and drain the frame and engine well. Then I change the filter.
Button it up and put in alittle over a qt in the frame. Any more and it
will be running out down the frame. Believe me what a mess that is.
Start it up and let it idle 30 seconds or so and shut it off. Put what's left of the 2nd qt in and your good to go. This method reads just slightly
overfill but have never seen any oil blowing out.

WOW guys, 1-1/2 Quarts is all I've ever been able to get in my '03 or my 1990 XR250, with a filter change. ART

WOW!! Man am I glad I don't have to mess with that trickery. On my 91 you just let the oil drain for 10 to 15 minutes(I do)and while the oil is draining take the filter out and put a new on in. Then I just pour 1 full liter in and about 1/2 of another one,check the dipstick and if it not quite to full just add a tad more. No starting the bike or anything,I like it that way. I always check my oil level before riding and you guys with 96-03 XRs have to let it idle and everything. I just pull out the dipstick,wipe it off,stick it back in and check it. I would get confused with suck trickery on the newer bikes.........of course I get confused over about everything anyways. Later,Matt

I crashed my truck today sorry about that being out of no where, but i USE 1.8L every time, and it's right on the fill line.. just so ya know

i changed the oil on my 03 xr400 and my friends 02 xr250 and we both took about 1.8L u should always check the level using the crankcase oil level check bolt where the 2 oil lines meet the engine under the filter housing. and never rev the bike when running the bike to check the oil as this will give false reading it must 'idle' for those 5 mins.
