 XR350 Project
If anyone is interested, here is a photo link to a site where I have posted a collection of pictures showing some of the things I have mentioned concerning my XR350 on this forum over the last several months. Thanks for the advice some of you have given at times. I took my bike apart and painted the frame, and fit a 2000 XR600 swingarm to the bike, to accept the old XR350 wheel. I will add more pictures in the future, showing a billet sprocket cover and kickstand, painted engine, and XR400 Supertrapp muffler / XR's Only OS header exhaust system, and the finished (for as long as that lasts) bike. |

| I have to say so far your bike is looking pretty sweet. Looks like there has been alot of time invested on your part. That engine paint on the cylinder head cover looks awesome. Cant wait to seemore pics of it. |

| Hi - thanks for the nice comments guys. The paint I used on the motor is called "low gloss black". It really is more like flat black, which I'm afraid might hold on to dirt/mud a little bit more than gloss would. The valve covers were red anodized when I got them. The only place I have ever seen any other valve covers like these is on a German XR600 supermoto website. Several of the bikes on that site have these same red valve covers (they will also fit XR600 head covers). I can't find any info on who made them. |

jg, Im the person that has the xr350r project picture posted. I was in the middle of installing a 85 xr600 swingarm on my 350. I used 5 or 6 copper washer, but have not had a chance to test it out yet due to bad crank. I did pick up another xr350r in very good shape. I posted a thread with a picture under fishbone1's thread. I checked out your pictures, cool ! Are you doing the machining? By the way, the valve caps that you have are way cool. I think that you are the one that out bid me on ebay:) I had seen them a few years back in a White Brothers catalog, but they had discontinued them. I thought I was a XR350R nut, but you have me beat by far!! Great job

Hi Hondarider- Thanks for looking at my pictures. I did do all the machining on the aluminum parts, but not the aluminum welding on the kickstand and swingarm. I haven't had time to work on this bike for over a month, so it is still not done. I will try to get it done before the fall so I can ride it a bit before winter. I will add pictures as things progress. I have only seen those valve covers once on eBay, so it must have been you that I was bidding against. They will also fit XR600 and a couple others, so if the seller had mentioned more than just "1985 XR350", the bidding would have probably gone even higher. Your new XR350 looks to be in pretty good shape. Are you going to combine the best of the two bikes? |

| That kickstand is awesome. I saw some pictures one time where a guy modified his kickster and it swung all the way up under his side number plate. I think you bike is going to be one sharp looking custom dirt bike when its all back together. |

jg, I think that I will combine the two to make one nicer xr350, but for now, I am just having fun ridding it. I have the Fly blue handle bars, and the hand gaurds that may go on the runner tomorrow if it doesnt rain here. I did remove the auto comp release cable, but left the manual on the bars. I have found it to be a good thing on my xl600, if it gets flooded. I sure dont need it for kick starting the 350 , after kicking the xl600 for 9 years! Keep use updated on your sweet XR350R! love that kickstand! |

On the frame, I used VHT Bright Orange epoxy paint. It is a great match to Honda's orange. On the engine, I used Duplicolor Low Gloss Black engine enamel. It is supposedly good up to 500°F, but I'll find out how tough it is when I finally get the bike going.
I'm not sure what you mean about the swingarm, but I did have to remove some welded on brackets that supported the XR600's disc brake caliper and rotor guard. I used a band saw to trim off whatever I could, then machined everything flush to the surfaces with a Bridgeport milling machine.
As for progress, now my motor is finally all put back together and ready to go in the frame. It looks great. I will add pictures in a couple weeks. |

| why did you decide to use the xr600's swingarm and not the 350's rim and brakes. I was thinking of doing the swingarm swap just for the rear disk and 18inch rims. I thought they would be a huge plus! |

| I picked the swingarm up on eBay for about 25 bucks, and did not have the wheel or brake. After I measured the XR600 and XR350 swingarms (using a milling machine with an edge finder and a digital readout as my measuring tool), I knew that it would only take a little work to keep the stock XR350 wheel aligned with the centerline of the frame and have the sprockets line up. Without an XR600 wheel to look at, I couldn't be sure if that wheel would also be lined up or worse off than the XR350 wheel was (I could tell from the positions of the chain guides on the two swingarms that the sprocket on the XR350 sticks out a little more than the XR600, relative to the inside of the swingarm), or slightly shifted to one side, so instead of risking spending a bunch of extra money on it, I decided to modify the XR600 swingarm to fit the XR350 wheel. I had to make a 2 mm steel spacer to insert on the axle between the swingarm and the stock wheel spacer on the sprocket side of the bike. This made the XR350 sprocket line up to the motor using the XR600 swingarm, helped the sprocket line up inside the chain guide, and shifted the wheel 1 mm to the right side of the bike, which it needed to do to be aligned, as it was 1mm farther to the left in the XR600 swingarm. |

Hey jg, I was wondering if you had to mod the mounting areas on the xr400 supertrapp exhaust can to fit the xr350? I want to put a different exhaust on my 350, but the only one that I can find is the old supertrapp. I would like the IDS2. |

I didn't have to change the mounting areas on the Supertrapp, but I did have to make changes to the mount on the frame. I had to weld a new bracket on. The new bracket is farther back on the frame rail than the stock bracket, and it also holds the muffler a little higher than the stock bracket would have. I did tweek the muffler's hanger bracket a bit. That just consisted of putting mounting bracket in a vice and prying on the can to change the bracket's angle slightly. I am not sure if I needed to do that though. I think it may have been unnecessary.
Today I put a couple pics of the engine in XR350 gallery. I'll post them here when they show up. |
