I picked up my new (to me) 2001 XR650L last night! Woohoo! I bought it from a buddy, 4000 miles on it, never in the dirt, not a scatch on it, totally stock. So now I have lots of fun times ahead getting it dirty, and swapping out some parts to make it rip. I got to take it for a street ride last night borrowing his helmet, but my helmet won't be here until monday, so no dirt until then. I can't wait. Thanks for all the good advice from you all that steered me to this decision. Last night was the first time I ever rode a 650L, and I have to admit, it was VERY encouraging to feel the power and performance of this thing STOCK. I can't wait to uncork it and see what it is really meant to do.

2001 XR650L: DaveCL's carb mods (.020" shim, 58/160 jets, slide drilled), de-smogged, de-baffled, 14/48 gearing, MT21 tires (140/80, 90/90), K&N pod filter, Baja Designs skidplate. More to come...

Hey MAINEiac, I see you are running Pirelli MT21's instead of the Teraflex's you had before. Why the change? I was considering buying the MT21's as a 50/50 tire that still will perform well in the dirt. The Teraflex seems a little too dirt-focused for me. I want dirt performance, but I know I'll put some pavement miles on it too.

I'm hoping to do some of the "cheap mods" first. Things like the carbeuretor mods, the smog removal, air filter/airbox mods, etc. Any advice about those things would be great. I hear people talk about removing the snorkel, modifying the airbox, and relocating the battery (to the old airbox). Can anyone explain those projects to me? What is most worthwile and what can cause problems? I can't ride yet (helmet not here, bike not registered, etc), so I might as well turn some wrenches!

bridog,

The Tera-Flex is a great off-road tire, but I did not care for how it felt on pavement. Loose and unpredictable is the best way to describe it. Should be used only if you have a need for something THAT aggressive.

I ran Dunlop 606's last year, and they work OK. But the Pirelli MT21's run better at higher speeds on pavement. I was getting headshake with the 606's at 60+ mph. The Pirelli's have run up to 75 mph without this problem (fast as I've gone on them so far). They also work as well off-road as the 606's do (for me anyway).

Welcome Bridog:
I am a newbie also. Bought my XR-L in March. As you can see from my signature I have done some mods. I would have to say that Dave_cl carb mods, along with removing the exhaust baffle probably made the biggest difference and only cost $12.

It is so much fun to modify the bikeand actually be able to feel the difference in the performance. I have a set of Pirelli MT21 coming in the mail (I hope...havent heard from AZ motorsports in a while). The bike has some pretty tired Kenda trackmasters on it now. DOT but aweful on the road. I am hoping that the pirellis will be good on the road as well as off.

As far as moving the battery to the airbox...Can't say as I have seen that done before.

Oh yeah...almost forgot....change the sprockets...it make a big difference too. Lots more fun to ride!

I moved my battery to my airbox a long time agoe I have a K N pod type air filter and crank case filter than took every thing off of the air box and made a cover for the front of the air box with a peice of black plastic from a antifeeze jug than I moved battery and all electronics to air box and got rid of battery box and brackets than I put XR600 side pannels on. This makes the 650L feel much lighter and thinner. With this filter settup and jetted correctly my bike runs perfect.

That setup sounds good...but I'm still a little confused. Where is the air filter actually located now? What do you mean by "pod filter?" I've heard that term used on this message board, but don't really know what you mean. Also, any good source to order the air filter from? My local shop sucks, it's almost like they don't even want my business. So I'll be phone or internet ordering my parts...

I like the idea of the "thinner" side panels. The 650L has some wide "hips!"

The filter slips onto the end of your carb, the filter that I am using is about 4 inches long about 3 inches diameter.

thanks for the photos, KLX365. I want to do that to my bike. A couple of questions:

1. What filter did you use? How do I know which K&N filter would work?
2. Do you have a "perfect fit" where the filter fits onto the carb? I would worry about a sloppy fit allowing particles to "sneak in" past the filter.
3. By "prefilter," do you mean the foam wrap around the K&N?
4. Do you think you sacrifice much in terms of the filter's ability to stay out of harm's way? I'm thinking about water crossings and similar situations where having the filter tucked away inside a box might not be a bad thing. Then again, those K&N filters are pretty impervious to nasties.

I like it a lot! Very clean modification. It's on my list of "must do" upgrades.
