I am wondering if any business sells hydraulic brake switches and keyed ignition in Canada. Also, can you order direct from Baja Designs or do actually have to own a buisness? Thanks for the help.

You can get the switches from Dennis Kirk, K&S, Baja Designs, or search the web. They are any where from 11 to 20 bucks so shop around.

I ran across a Website recently that sells all kinds of automotive and motorcycle electrical components. They sold retail and their prices looked pretty good. I'm sure that's where most dual sport kit manufacturers buy their components. I'll try to find it and send you a link.

Thanks guys, though Dennis Kirk does not sell keyed ignitions. That is my main issue, solely for security reasons.

I just did a search on Google and came up with a bunch of sites that sell keyed switches. One site even had them in several different variations. Sent link.

I was just curious, I too found those when doing a google search. how would one connect those to the stock kill switch, or an aftermarket multi switch. Any suggestions are most welcome and appreciated. Thanks.

I personally have never done it, but I would think you could just use the same wires as the kill switch. Just make sure the switch is normally open, and you mount it where the back is not easily accessible. You might even be able to get a small switch from a place like Radio Shack and mount it somewhere inconspicuous to use as a deterrent. No matter what you do, you'll want to keep the original kill switch in case of emergencies.

The two wires you need to hook up to are the black w/white tracer and green coming from the Ignition Control Module. The wires are black w/white tracer and black at the kill switch though.

I'd be happy to send you a wiring diagram if you need it.

Thanks for the Wiring Diagram. I got the keyed ignition switch today in the mail, and it has three places to connect wires with screws, like at the back of a light switch. I'm not an electrical guy so bear with me. Each wire connecter is for 1. to battery, 2. to ignition, and 3. to accessory. Now, after looking at the wiring diagram and trying to figure out how the handlebar multiple switch on my dual sport kit works, I'm still thinking on how to connect this. The wires you mentioned in your previous post seem to be the ones I need, though to connect the accessories will be somewhat of a problem. The thought of calling up my Uncle who is an electrical guro, I'm sure he will have some valuable insight. Though if anyone else does, PLEASE share it. Thanks, I'm not in the mood to have my bike stolen. ;)

Hey all! I was just trying to install the keyed ignition, and i connected the two wires from the stock kill switch, one being a groud and the other being the short circuit wire I believe, I connected the ground to the screw in the left handguard, because it was metal and connected to the handlebars as did the stock kill switch ground. I then connected the other stock Black/White wire to one of the three possible screws at the bottom of the ignition switch, the one that said TO IGNITION. So, I fired her up with the key in the on position, middle is off, right is on, and left is accessories. So, it was running and all so I grabbed the keyed ignition switch which was laying on top of all the wires behind the headlight. I "think" i might have knocked it on the handlebar, and the switch being metal might have grounded there, though there is a ground wire so.... Anyways, only my left leg was on the ground, and as I turned the key to the Off position, the middle, I felt a surge in my left leg and all my muscles tensed up and I got scared. No, I'm not a wuss. So then, the bike continued to run, I'm not sure I turned the key fully to the OFF position, so I turned off the gas, and let it die. I then disconnected the battery cables for possible further electrical shock, and parked the bike, and had a beer. I then proceeded to call the doctors, and have an apointment this afternoon. So...long story short, I have pictures of the connections I did:

so you guys can try and figure out what went wrong. Thanks all! And no, I'm not dead yet!

I figured out what is wrong, the "universal" keyed switch which I bought, uses the common way of shorting out the circuit to kill the engine. My XR400R does the exact opposite, it completes the circuit to kill the engine, seems like a weird idea but it works. The problem is though with the key in the OFF position, the bike runs and the key can be removed, but in the ON position, the bike doesn't run, and the key stays put. So to remove the key, I have to turn it to the OFF position, thus making the bike able to start, so the unit is useless, I have to purchase the P/N 35010-GCF-A20 from and XR650L that connects directly to the stock kill switch.

wait, any key switch will work even if it is not exactly wired like the kill switch, all you need to do is figure out how the switch works, if it breaks the circut to kill the engine, then you have to put it on the wire running from the cdi/points to the coil. If it completes the circut to kill the engine, then you have to connect a splice to the same wire, and then through the switch to ground. hope this helps.

Yeah, I've been trying to mess with that, but I haven't gathered up enough courage to mess with all that because of the cost of replacing a new one. Also the bike is at the shop. Thanks for the input though.

I wouldn't mess with the kill switch circuit. In a car the ignition switch goes between the battery and the ignition circuit. To duplicate that on a bike it should go between the alternator and the ignition control module (ICM). Looking at the wiring diagram I would put the switch on either the Br or the Bl/R wire where they go into the ICM. The wire from the alternator would go on the battery contact of the switch and the wire to the ICM would go on the ignition contact.
