2005 XR650L-First, thanks to Gary Crawford for his very helpful article, with pics. on removing the smog system. His 1995 was identical to my 2005. One thing I found worked well was to use the pre-curved end of the cannister hose to connect to the tranny vent and use the cut-end to go to the air box. The pre-curved end prevents any kinking coming from the tranny vent. While I was in there, I removed the passenger strap from the seat... the two bolts fit perfectly in the threads left in the head from the smog pump removal... I tried to look up Gary by name for a personal thanks but was unsuccessful. Next for me is to modify the carb per the forum. We finally had a sunny day here in Al. Nick |

HEY! welcome to the site.
I missed the part about the seat strap bolts in the motor. Good idea!
Have fun with it. We had good weather today in Missouri, too. And it's about &*(^^%$^&*( Time! |

stnick....thanks for the props ...glad you found my pics helpful. I'll be tackling the carb mods next, jets, drill slide, shim needle. Hoping to find the power for 2nd and 3rd gear wheelies everyone talks about. |

I found the pics very helpfull too and used them as a guide to do the mod on my bike. I noticed you plugged the T connecter in the carb vent lines. My friend insists that you should remove the line completely and plug the fittings on the carb. Is it neccessary to leave the line in place? Thanks |

Thanks for the welcome! There seems to be a lot of useful information on here. I am still not sure if leaving the vent line in place is required though. Do the different parts of the carb need to be connected together? It seems to run ok without the line...but I haven't installed the carb kit yet..
Thanks again! |

Hi there, Ezekiel - Yeah, lots of 650 "L" riders on this forum, it's a good place to stop for a coffee break.
There have been some different ways to handle the crank case breather shown on this forum. I tried routing my hose to the intake of the airbox but noticed throttle response to be worse. So I instead just terminated the hose with a filter. However after doing that oil 'vapor' coats stuff aft of the filter:

I think if I were to do it over, I'd hunt down some 1/2" fuel line and route it from the crank case up to the intake side of the airbox where it'd probably interfere less with the fuel/air mixture. |

| I was referring to the small hose connecting two parts of the carb together. In the article, the author left it in place and capped off the T-fitting that used to lead to the smog pump. Can you simply remove this line and cap off the fittings on the carb, or does the line serve a function? My bike seems to run fine with the line removed.... |

ah...That I do not know. Normally I'd go out and take a look at my configuration but I recently sole the L. I'd say if it runs fine, abide by the definition of carburetor in French, which translates literally to "Do Not Touch"
:) :)
