This is crazy! I have a 2000 XR 650 L with 3,000 miles. Uncorked, Dave's mods, supertrapp with 8 disks, etc. Was running awesome for the past year. Was on a nice ride and then pulled over to watch the sunset and shut it off. Then, it made a funny cough/semi weak backfire and now it won't start. When I turn it over and give it gas there is no audible noise change that I would normally hear when twisting the throttle. It's like it's not getting any gas at all. Has anyone had this problem? Is it some sort of vapor lock or vacuum problem? Did the backfire disconnect or jam something in the carb? I am not an experienced mechanic but the basics have been covered such as full tank of gas, run switch is on, tried to jump start it etc. Any help before I take it to the shop would be great! Thanks,

2000 XR650L

Do you have spark? Did you try opening the float bowl drain to see if there is gas in it? Try pulling the air cleaner and give it a shot of starting fluid.

Pull the spark plug and see if you're getting spark (hold the metal side of the spark plug against the engine to ground it and hit the starter button -- you should be able to see a strong blue spark at the business end of the plug).

My guess is you aren't getting spark. This could be due to a number of causes. First things first, check your fuses to make sure you didn't blow any, but assuming they're intact, my first guess would be that your CDI crapped out. This is a pretty common issue with this bike. If you know anyone else with an XR650L, see if you can borrow their CDI box, swap it for yours, and see if the bike starts. If so, just buy a new CDI online (around $100). If not, then you know the problem lies elsewhere.

Keep us posted on what you find.

i once had a backfire out of the intake side, that blew the carb out of the cylinder head side carb boot. it wouldnt do anything.

took me a while to find it. i did the whole check spark, had a spark, sprayed starting fluid in through the air box with the air filter removed. that didnt do anything. i just happened to see that the carb wasnt sitting correctly.

Whew! Although I couldn't see it at first, the backfire did blow the carb off the boot coming from the cylinder head. It is not off by much but the carb was pushed out enough so that the "seal" of the boot to the carb was open which obviously created the dead engine. I loosened both the front and back boots and wiggled it back into position and tightened the clamps back up and it started right up! Thanks for the help everyone! Just saved me a bunch of money!

Wouldn't you know it? This very thing happened to me this morning leaving work. I had to wake up my wife to pick me up. Came home ran a search for backfire and no start and BAM!!! I re-fit, then re-tightened the collar and she fired right up!!!

YOU GUYS ROCK!!!!!!!!

I just hope that someday I'll be able to pass on information to someone else that needs help.

Thanks
Scott
