Hi folks . . .
Question, obviously . . .
I have big bike experience . . . Valk and 1800 VTX . . . though the seat height of this 650 beast haunts me.
Looking to ride to me "Dirt" destination . . . then go rough.
I have yet to sit on one . . . just looking for honest advice. Can I lower the 650L in way . . . I want control off road and like the travel.
Thanks! |

Hint Hint,
For a forum to be the least bit successful you need to accommodate new members with some what less ambiguous answers. Newbies come here and get referred to other topics . . . thanks . . . stagnation sets in.
I've read through that topic before posting . . . didn't answer my question. I am looking for a person of my size to answer.
Thanks!

From that referred page.
I am 230, and about 6 feet . . . does this make a difference.
I have read the weight vs spring ratio is relative to a 160-180# person. Just wondering if my fat ass makes a difference. Thanks! |

| I'm 6'2" go about 240 and I don't have a need to lower mine. The suspension sags quite a bit once you get on it. You won't be able to flat foot both feet but you will be able to one. I can't flat foot both feet but I come close. Hope this helps a little more. |

Welcome to the forum Corvus.
Here's my experience, as it may be of relevance for you in your decision.
I'm 5ft 7 and weigh 230 lbs. When I first got my new XR650L it was quite a comical picture to see me at a set of stop lights ..... in order to put a foot down I had to kinda straddle the bike with the opposite foot up off the peg and my leg hanging across the seat. The first thing I did was get a Kouba lowering link that brought the ride height down about 1 1/2 inches, I also pushed the fork tubes up an inch in the triple clamps to maintain the stock steering geometry. After this I didn't look quite as silly at stop lights, but was still pretty much on the ball/toes of my foot when touching the ground. I then swapped out the stock seat for a Corbin, which, once broken in, lowered the height about another inch. I can now touch the ground on the balls of both feet and feel quite comfortable on the bike (the fact that I've been riding for 30+ years also helps).
I have a set of 17 inch Supermoto rims that I'll be putting on this spring (if it ever warms up here), that will lower it even further. One thing to remember if you do lower it, you'll also want to cut an inch or so out of the stock kickstand so the bike won't fall over because the kickstand doesn't lean it over enough.
Good luck! |

Thanks, that helps a lot !!!
One last question . . . anyone able to compare the 650L to the CRF230L ?
Obviously cc's are the big diff, along with spring travel . . .
My weight on a 230 cc, I question . . .

I just lowered my bike like Old Dog did using the Kouba lowering link. I don't want to cut an inch off of the kickstand. Does anyone know about a shorter kickstand that will fit an XR650l.
Thanks |

My wife has a crf230 and when I ride it, I practically bottom out. Stock it doesn't have the power I am used to either. I am 5'10" about 230lbs and I have an 09 XR650L and I love it. Ii guess it depends on what you are used to and what you are actually looking for. A street bike of a dirt bike. For dirt applications the Honda In my book is better for dirt than the Suz. or Kaw. On the street it handles like a dream. I cannot sit totally flat footed at a stop, bit it is close. I wouldn't lower the bike though. I wouldn't want to mess with the travel as I ride it off road also, agressively I might add. I have been riding all my life and have had big thumpers before. So I have the experience manipulating the pig around. For dirt it is a handfull as you will see if you havn't had the experience yet. Myself I prefer a powerful bike verses one I can throw around like a 230. My other bikes currently ridden are a Kawasaki ZRX1200 and a Honda CRF450X. Good luck with your venture, I hope you find the best machine for you! Remember it is all personal preference.

| Those links are entirely too expensive, I'll stick with the sliding off the seat or just not stopping. |

I'm cheap too.
keep your eyes open, every once in awhile someone buys a lowered XRL and puts the stock link back in.

Of course it is. You may have to make some adjustments in the sense of how you get on or what you do when stopped at traffic lights, etc., but your height should be very do-able.
