interesting that we are all old bastards ie not teens.
Does that mean we know what we like? enough power to rip it up, but not kill ourselves (like some off these superbikes eg yammy R1). We already had enough NDE's (near death experiences) to know enough its enough. BUT we still like to know that we have one of the biggest singles around to give us kudos compared to other girls who ride 250's (woosies). We are old enough to still know how to 'fix things' and don't always want to have to put the bike in the shop to do stuff we call normal.
MAn enough to handle nearly 400lbs of bone breaking steel, especially when its stalls on an inconvenient slope and we can still support the entire bike with one leg without being crushed...yet cool enough to hit the electric leg and smile..knowing how much of a bastard is was to kick start the ol' bikes.
Its all good...even thought my pig is in the shop getting an engineer to build a completely new rear shock shaft because is toast, and buying a new rear is unrealistic - I miss it, and having the 650 keeps me 43 years young.

Well I'm still the young guy I guess. 24. I bought my L cause I knew I would get in trouble of some nature on a rocket, and to learn to ride on something that goes so fast just seems foolish. I think I would have enjoyed the old days when you could buy little bikes. I guess I will enjoy the old days soon enough though, I've got a 1971 honda sl350 that should be on the road come spring and I just picked up a 1975 honda cb125s, these are in addition to my 650 and a 1976 honda tl250. Hmmm, I might have a problem.

42 years old here.
Haven't had a bike that wasn't a crappy, will never run, money sucking, cobweb collecting, project bike since 1988! Grew up with street bikes, but always had a thing for thumpers and wanted to have some fun in the dirt.
When I went looking this fall for a dp bike, my heart was set on the DR 400S. Tripped on a guy selling a 3 year old BRP with 3000 miles on it for $4500, and couldn't pass it up. Haven't regretted it for a second. The XR is a tractor! Seat height is a little intimidating. Gotta say though, only people who know what they're doing dare even ask to sit on it.
A lot of guys in my neighborhood grew up with dirt bikes, but let them go for other interests a long time ago. Getting a lot of envious looks. Might have some new riding buddies next year.

51 YO here in Alaska. Grew up on dirt bikes and motocross. All the walls and ceiling of my bedroom as a kid were covered with posters of guys on dirt bikes jumping across sunsets and the like. It's all I thought about as a teen.
Last dirt bike I had was a Yamaha IT465 in 1981. Sold it and took 22 years off but in '03 bought an '03 Yamamha TTR250 on a whim. Something got rekindled so I bought an '05 WR250F in '05. The big problem I noticed though was all the places I rode as a kid were buried under Wal Marts and subdivisions...
I needed something that I could ride on the road legally then jump off onto a trail as they came along.
Last summer while cruising Cragslist, I came across an '06 XR650L with only 1,000 street miles on it. I told the wife I was just going to go "take a look". I looked at it and it was showroom perfest but I just couldn't bring myself to make an offer. I was about to "walk" when I asked the guy if I could ride it around the block once.
"Once" around the block turned into "twice" and that was "it", we settled at $4,300.00.
I feel the XR650L is one of the best "values" and fun motorcycles going. Simple, stone reliable, and not "too much tied up in it" if it sits for a while.
