Hello all, I'm dual sporting my 2002 xr250r Ive got everything but the license plate light (will be making the license plate bracket out of plastic after I come up with a light). Correct me if I'm wrong but every thing Ive seen says that the xr lights run off of AC not DC current, Ive found small LEDs used for lighting the plate but they are 12v DC can I make this work some how or can someone recommend some sort of small light that will work. The guy that I bought the bike from installed a brake switch and converted the stock tail light using a 12v 1157 bulb. Sorry if this question sounds stupid but doing wiring is not one of my strong points. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jonny

That's my problem no battery stock bike (and only has AC current and no rectifier to convert power to DC) The only thing Ive changed is wiring plug and bar switch to convert the headlight to hi/lo beam, and plug to convert tail light so it has brake/tail light all using AC. The only thing I find is plate brackets w/tail lights for big $ or license lights that say for 12v DC. So my question is will the 12v DC lights work and last more than 1 day. I'm thinking that the 12v LEDs should work seeing that the tail light bulb is 12v DC I just don't want to spend $30.00 on them and have them stop working in the middle of the inspection and the bike fail.Ive all ready tried the dual sport kit method which changes it to DC. The first kit was $551.00 and after waiting for over a month and the company not returning my emails or phone calls I had my credit card company get my money back. The second kit $480.00 came in only a few days but was missing parts so I packed it up and sent it back the same day. The only thing I need now to satisfy the DMV is the license light and I have less than $100.00 in this set up. Thanks Jonny

I'm assuming you have the stock tail light. Would it be possible to cut a small rectangle out of the bottom of the lense and glue in a bit of clear plastic so that when your tail light is on it also shines on the plate, assuming you bolt it directly under the tail light. Just a thought to help you keep it on the cheap.

ALS650L, I have heard of a replacement lens you can buy for the xrs with the clear strip at the bottom but I have also heard some say that the police have gave them a hard time saying that the plate mounted to the fender just under the tail light is not legal and this could cause it to fail the inspection. But thanks for the suggestion.

here in NL if you have a blown bulb in the identity light you have to choices replace the bulb or remove it all together

rogersj, I don't think that will work here in Michigan. The paper work for making a motorcycle street legal clearly states that you need a license plate light to pass inspection. Thank Jonny

Hello all, I ended up just shooting from the hip on this one and it turned out the new light works great. I used a license plate light pigtail out of a Ford van that I junked it houses a GE 194 bulb, I just modified the pigtail to fit the plate holder I made and wired it into tail light harness. After hours of riding light still works, best of all the only money spent was for some butt connectors. Thanks for the suggestions and as always Ride hard and often. Jonny
