My 2006 DRZ 400S (1900 miles) starts fine with the choke on, however it’s backfiring (A-Lot with the choke on)and when I push the choke in it stops running.
This bike has a Dynojet spring and needle, and FMF exhaust.
The bike has been backfiring for the last 2 years, but only when I let off the gas / slow down. (only one little pop)
The bike has not ran much this year and sat still for around 3 or 4 weeks.
what do you think I need to do?
Clean the carb?
Add the jets from the Dyno kit? (if so what one?)
Adjust the air flow? (is so how much?)
Cut a hole in my air box? (if so how big? 3"x3" ?)

I'm not a bike mechanic so please speak english.
However, I’m very mechanically inclined.

Cheers!

my dr 650 pops all the time on deceleration im guessing it could be a lean spot although the plug looks fine

If I got what you said right "starts fine with the choke on" and "when I push the choke in it stops running" your carbs needs cleaning. Pay attention to the pilot jet.

I have a XR650L that used to backfire on deceleration a lot till I removed the smog pump. No more obnoxious backfiring.

+1 to what HorseRider said, you have a plugged up pilot jet. Pull the carb and give it a good cleaning and be sure to use compressed air to blow out all of the passages but DON'T loose the little o-ring at the top of the carb.

Does anybody have or know where I can get step by step instructions on cleaning the carb? I am pretty sure that is what is needed on a bike I am buying, guy let it sit with gas in it, will only idle with the choke on half way.
It is an 06 DRZ400S.

Thanks!

Either the shop manual or the Clymer manual should give you that info.
