My 03 CRF230 was running fine when I last rode it, but that was over 6 months ago. I'm going to sell it, so I wanted to make sure it was running properly. When I put it up last, I ran the engine with the fuel turned off until it died. When I fired it today, it was hard to start and after I got it running, it wouldn't run very good. It would barely stay running at an idle, but when I would put it on full choke (lever all the up, right?) the idle speed would increase. I turned the idle adjustment up a little and let it idle for a while, but when I open the throttle it sputters and just won't run out like it should. I didn't put any Sta-bil in it when I put it up, and the gas didn't smell very fresh, so I have drained the tank and will get some fresh fuel for it tomorrow. I also pulled the plug so I can replace it tomorrow, as well. Does it sound like I'm on the right track, or do I need to pull the carburetor and soak it in cleaner?

I put in fresh gas and a new plug. It seems to run a little better, but it's still not right. I let it idle on full choke for 5 minutes or so, and it will rev freely with the choke on, but it misses at higher RPS's. With the choke off, it bogs down when I snap the throttle. I'm also hearing some popping from the exhaust that I didn't notice when I last rode it. The temperature is probably a little cooler than it was when I rode it last (I've only ridden it a couple times), and the problem seems to be a little better with it warmed up, but it's still not right. Time to pull the carb?

Sorry jmoffett, but I think you are right on about pulling the carb. It really doesn't help to run the gas out of the carb if you don't empty the gas tank. As soon as old gas hits the carb,.. well you get the point.

Clean the carb using a dip cleaner like Gunk. Don't soak any rubber or plastic parts. Pay attention to the jets. Even after soaking the carb I always use a carburetor spray cleaner to make sure the jets are clear as will as the carb body ports.

I pulled the carb and removed the jets and shot carb spray through everything. I didn't have time to soak it, so I just put it back on and it's much improved. It started as soon as I hit the button and it ran much better than before, but I also didn't have time to let it warm up completely so it was still hesitating just a little before I had to put it up. I'll let it warm up completely tomorrow to see if that did the trick. Thanks.
