My 1987 XL600r is leaking oil out of the area around the cam chain tensioner. I have recently ordered a shop manual for the bike but I really want to get back to riding. Is the only fix for this is to move the engine out of the machine and dis-assemble the top end ? I am fairly sure it just needs a new O-ring around the bolt replaced. Could a person just remove the tensioner bolt out and just install a new O-ring ? Any help would be appreciated.

You can do it without pulling anything out or removing the top but it's a tricky operation. You need to get all the head cover bolts out or undone. What you do then is lift the top cover up a bit and put some wedges beneath it to hold it up so you have a bit of a gap. You then get some long nosed pliers and pull a pin up that's inside the head. That pin holds the tensioner in place, When that's up you then wiggle and pull out the actual tensioner bolt type head from the outside of the motor pulling it slightly out but not out and replace the O-ring. The o-ring should be just visible..Do not pull the pin any further out than you have to to access that seal. Slide the new seal on from the outside. If that pin comes all the way out you will need to re set the mechanism..That cannot be done with the head cover on so be careful..You also need to get the thin holding pin back in once you have the seal on and the tensioner pushed back in,,That could also be difficult ..

Thank you the the trick way to save some time on a repair. So far I have just ran a line of silicone around the cam tensioner bolt and letting it set for a day. I will try that and see if that will keep the engine from leaking so much oil . I don't figure that will be very long lasting, if it works. I think the bike needs some new valve guides and/or valves seals. I think I will just freshen the engine up with new piston rings and go through the head and make sure I have good valve guides and all in a month or two.
