Just joined the forum and Bike ownership crowd. I've rode quit a few bikes, all owned by others. Yamaha XT250,TT500,HondaV45 Sabre, Harley 1000 Sportster, as well as a few more that don't come to mind right now and numerous ATVs. Bought me a 2012 XR 650 L on May 8, and have over 1400 on it now. I didn't by it for a yard ornament. It's been a while since I been on a bike,15 years or so. Everything is coming back to me alright. Just need more time in the saddle. This is my first bike after riding other folks machines.
I've been a mechanic since 18 Yr old. Main propulsion diesel engines, US Navy ship, LST 1189. Over 25 years as a mechanic for heavy govt. equipment. Got into welding while on this job and have two welding machines of my own now, stick and MIG welders and associated tools to go with them(still collecting more when I can). Anyway, I plan on keeping this bike stock for awhile till my riding skills catch back up to what the bike can do. Then maybe start some upgrades. Been checking out area trails and pipelines lately and some backroads too.
The first mod I identified right off was the need for somewhere to tie off some cargo for transport. So I came up with this: WeldingWeb Forum Thread. I tried to add a picture but will have to study on how to do it, but the link will take you to it from another forum I post on. I think the next mod will be a bigger fuel tank and then another seat.

Next, fab up some subframe supports that bolt to the passenger peg holes, someone out there also fabs 'em.

dave_cl,

What's the purpose for them? I already have rack mounts at the turn signal bolts, next to the frame and one thatcomes out from under the bag behind the seat. There is also one under the rear taillight assembly.
Are the subframe supports for the rack or another purpose? Do you have the link to the post that you are mentioning about these supports?

All motorcycles manufactured have strong points and weak points...one of the weak points of the XR650L is the sub frame, many people who put any weight on them can find the sub frame cracking back there, so people have been developing "sub frame brackets" or racks that incorporate mounts that connect to other parts of the frame for added support.
one of the other points to address is the counter shaft, periodically lube it with grease or moly grease(better) or replace it with a countershaft sprocket from a XR650R(If I remember correctly?)it has more countershaft surface area.

jjones006,

Can you give me an idea of where these subframe brackets should be or look like. If I can get a picture in my minds eye of what I need to make I can make it. I've made a lot of things using this method, just getting an idea of what it's supposed to look like when finished. Then making it to fit and coming up with my own dimensions as I go if need be.
Where can I find the counter shaft sprocket your talking about? I need to get a maintenance/repair manual for this bike to find these things myself. One thing I learned for sure in the USN & the job since then, was how to read & understand tech manuals on all sorts of machinery. Thanks for your help, I appreciate your insight to a noobie to bike ownership.

Here are a few ideas applied for the sub frame:

these bolt in:

welded in:

the counter shaft is where the small sprocket for the chain comes out of the engine.
I cut a hole in my counter shaft cover so I can just stick a tube from the canned white grease I use to shoot the grease into each spline.

Those look simple enough to build. I think I can come up with something like that. The second pic looks like 3/4"x3/16" material, does that sound about right? The last one would seem to be less obvious of an add on if properly welded. That kind seems like could be easily added to the factory design and added during production if Honda would do it.
Seeing where the counter shaft is, I would have called it the drive sprocket shaft. I'll take off the cover today and have a look at it. Drilling a hole there will be easy to do to facilitate lubing the shaft. I'm guessing, lube it everytime I lube the chain would be sufficient, right?

as far as the thickness goes, you could probably check out the twisted throttle site or manracks.com would probably say what thickness is used?

as far as lubing the counter shaft sprocket I lube mine more then the chain because it only takes a few seconds but that's just me.

The guy at manracks could make you one, the catch is either giving him detailed measurements or being close enough by him so he can get the measurements off your bike,
try contacting him and see If he can help you out.
Or
hopefully you can find someone crafty near you that will make one for you or make your own If you are crafty enough to do that.

Stop by with your bike sometime and let's see what we can come up with. Did you check the link I posted in the first post on this thread? It's been real handy for me to have my own welding equipment and the knowledge of how to use it.
