Your advice welcome. ’07 XR650L, White Bros slip on, Uni foam filter, & Drilled air box. Elevation 400’ – 1,500’ typically.
Adjustment #1: Bike runs pretty good, and plug looks kinda’ rich and she burns fuel. Some kit had been installed – adjustable needle at 2nd from bottom, lighter spring (I think), & 165 main, & stock pilot. I opened her up the see what was inside and do some Dave mods. I do not have the stock needle and spring and will adjust around them if I can. So I drilled the holes at 9/64 (what I had in stock) and put the mixture at 2-1/4. The bike runs better now and more responsive to throttle. (2nd gear wheelies seem to be hard to come by, though unlike before)
Adjustment #2: (not done yet) So, I’m shooting for better still. I have a 158 & 160 mains and 55 & 58 pilots. Considering the above I plan to:
Put adjustable needle to 3rd from bottom (forgot what effect that would have?) Keep holes at 9/64 with lighter spring Install 160 main and 55 pilot (I’d install the stock needle and spring but $$$ by Honda)
Any tips before I crack it open again (or for the third time)?

| Well, I think I've got it good enough. Put adjustable needle to 3rd from bottom, slide holes at 9/64, 160 main and 55 pilot with mixture screw at just under 2-1/2. Ran very well in all ranges with slightly more kick off throttle and same or possible slight loss at WOT. The flubber while at 80%+ throttle and shifting is gone now. I should look at the plug after a nice ride, but I can live with this. |

| I must ask, how does the mixture screw effect the settings? Turn out = more or less fuel? I may be doing some high elevation in CO soon and want to know how adjusting it would help the higher I go. What ranges does it effect when adjusted? |

It's a fuel screw, turning it in reduces the fuel at idle and very low throttle settings.
If you get high up and it runs like crap, you can remove or wedge off a bit the airbox sidecover.
the CV carb usually does a good job adjusting to elevation changes, though. |
01 XR650L - Keihin 158 main jet, 55 'long' pilot jet, screw out 2.5 turns, stock needle shimmed 0.035, slide holes drilled to 5/32, dynojet shorter CV spring installed, foam filter, snorkel removed, stock exhaust, air pump removed, thermometer dipstick, XCMH fr/r tires, 14-48 spkts. |
