I recntly retired my '94 XR650L and replaced it with a 2000 model with low miles. The previous owner thought he may have used synthetic oil at the last oil change. Thing is, compared to my '94 model, this thing shifts smooth as can be. I had bought my '94 used as well with low miles but that thing had a sloppy, notchy feeling shift, especially from first to second from the get go. This one is slick as can be. Could synthetic oil be the reason?

Some claim it makes the bike shift smoother, I switched to synthetic oil once and I didn't really see a difference, maybe I should give it another try sometime.

It could have been a situation where the previous owner of your previous bike never had his clutch adjusted properly and it wore out cauing the bike to shift rougher. Synthetic oil is designed to help ease shifting, so I would lend it to that and the fact that the bike has low mileage.

I bought my 2007 L with 3400 miles on it. The original owner had just had the oil changed again at the Honda dealer, and they used conventional oil. Clutch and everything else was adjusted fine considering it was bone stock. I did the carb mods and desmogged it and went to Castrol full synthetic soon after I got it, and the shift feel changed immediately. I was surprised, but hardly dissatisfied.
