I got an 87 xr 600 this week for next to nothing. When you get it cranked it runs great, but needs a high idle to keep from going dead and will not hardly crank hot. I've owned (including a Zundapp as my first dirt bike) or been around about everything but an open class honda. Current bike is a 76 TT500 that is hell in the woods and would really like to get this bike set up as a reliable ride. It has a supertrapp and is otherwise stock. Jets are stock 122. The guy I got it from supposedly went through the carbs and I think it has been sitting up a while. Primary carb is leaking a bit and a correct float adjustment hasn't helped. I have needle/seat kits ordered and plan to soak them. I have heard these dual carb models have a reputation for hard starting and know a guy that converted his 350 to a single carb that made it much easier to start. New plug does not show it loading up and looks fine, maybe just a little lean.

My question is can the dual carbs be set up for fairly easy starting /reliability and any recommendations for the jets or is conversion to a single carb a feasible setup. I'm new to the site and could not find any old posts specifically addressing this so any help would be appreciated.

I have a 1987 XL600R and it can be a pain to start if the bike has been sitting for over a week since the last ride. If I ride it often, daily, it usually starts in a couple of kicks. The bike is mostly stock with the exception of a supertrapp exaust and richer jetting. And the choke cable/lever isn't on the bike, so I start it cold with no help with usual choke/cold start. I used to have a Yamaha XT600, also dual carb., and that bike always started in a kick or two cold or hot. I think you should ride the bike a while before changing the carb. set up and all. The bike starting may get better after a couple tanks of gas . Maybe add a fuel injector/carb. cleaner to the fuel with the next fill up.

I ended up boiling the carbs out and bumping the mains from 122 to 125 and slow jet from 45 to 48. Then replaced the stock stator with a ricky stator. Runs great and cranks almost always on the 1st or 2nd kick. I think the main culprit on the hard starting was the stator.
