Anyone know what part of the valve stack is the hi speed compression? I'm thinking of experimenting with my forks valve stack to soak up rocks better. It's my '00 XR400.

Well I found out the info I was looking for and removed 6 of the 12 .004" washers of the shim stack, leaving 6. Rode Tres Ritos, N.M. this weekend. If you've ridden there, you know how rocky it is. Hi speed compression over rocks was much improved and allowed me to ride faster thru them as the forks soaked them up without transfering so much shock to me. Now just have to work on the shock to get the rear to do the same thing.

did you find the info out on the yahoo group xr400? i found out the same thing, leave six shims at the valve bottom of the fork. seems to work better now as well. sure is cheaper than send them away.

any idea how many shims should be in the other valve on each fork. i guess the are the low speed shims?

mcdavis, by the "other valve" I assume you're talking about the ones at the top of the forks. Those are your rebound valves, not slow speed compression.

Hey Pete, no, I don't bottom out easier. You use the clicker settings to adjust for big hits like from landing jumps or G outs, as the clicker needle determines how much oil flows thru the base valve bleed passages. Removing shim washers from the valve stack allows the suspension to react faster/more plush to things like stutter bumps, rocks, roots and such. I wish I had done the mod before our trip to the Rainbow tr.

Well, I might try the same adjustment then. I could sure use the help getting over some of that Rainbow cobblestone. Thanks for the info.

hold up. there are only two valves with shims right? the clicker bolt at the bottom of the forks (the one i assume you removed shims from) and the shim stack that resides on one end of the rod assembly (the other end of which has the rebound clicker bolt)

did you find any information about this second valve stack?

thanks

mcdavis, I removed the shims from the valve/clicker assembly at the bottom of the fork tube(compression), as the stock XR forks are undersprung and overvalved. I haven't replaced my springs yet but I have added a 3/4" spacer under the fork cap to increase preload. The range of rebound seems to be fine so I haven't messed with that valve assembly, the one you speak of that's at the end of the damper rod. I have no mod info on that stack.

ok, I know what you did now. I guess the other valve shim stack is fine found no info on it. I agree, remove those shims at the bottom valve made a significant improvement on sharp edged bumps etc.

I'll have to try that spacer for the preload

I think I could have lived with the existing fork preload and springs if I hadn't mounted a big 'ol IMS 4 gal tank on the bike. The extra weight of "it" full, necessitated more preload on the springs. It's a temp measure until I get around to putting 42kg springs in it, if I ever do.

I'd say "good". Fork is more plush thru the rocks and bumps. Go for it.

Will someone please map this out a little better? I'd love to do this on my xr400 considering how much the suspension sucks!

How technical do you need us to get? Do you have a shop manual? DO you know how to remove the bolt in the bottom of the forks? If none of this, PM me with your email address and I'll scan and send you the procedure as well as what to do with the compression stack.

I'm in the process of doing this as we speak. I will take some pictures when I start in on my second fork and will post them when finished.

As for the shock, this was some info I got from another XR400 rider

We also set the nitrogen at 150psi. This had a huge effect and really plushened up the rear end.
After I get the forks done I am off to do the shock. The oil I am using is AMSOIL suspension fluid. There are 2 different weights, light and medium. I went with the light oil, I will keep everyone informed once everything is finished, and will have pictures along the way hopefully showing everything.

Just got the bike back together to test it out. I removed 6 shims like what was mentioned in some of the original posts. The fluid I used is a 5wt oil, the medium is a 10wt and I thought that might be a little too much. I did a brief ride on the property and I have to say this, it will take some time to get it dialed back in but what a huge difference in the way it handles. The front end is so plush now its amazing. I can't wait to service the shock and give it the same treatment and then go test it out in the woods. I can say this, if the shock performs as well as my forks do right now, I'm gonna be flying down the trail. So far i am happy with it, I'll post more after I get some good time one the bike after I get everything finished.
