| they did make the xr500r up until 84, then they moved on to the 600 (more cc's = more torque) |

Hey SVandal, what did you pay for your 500? We have an '83 we picked up for $800 (with a few extras). We got a sweet deal on it. I'm looking for another one, but they are up around $1200!

heres an 84 on Ebay, if it were just a bit closer, I would buy it sight unseen just to mess around with.

Thanks for the tip Nantucket. I bought it. The pics look pretty rough, but I need a fork bad (it came with 2 pr.). I paid $400 for my ‘84 XR500R in ’92 and all I’ve put into it, until now was routine maintenance. Guess I lucked out. Seems funny I just paid the same $400 for a bike in pieces that doesn’t run, but I can't swing the 7K for the WR450 I want right now. (Oh, did I say WR on XR.com ? Sorry).

Hey no prob Brian, let us know how it turns out, Ive also got my eye on this one, an 86 CR125 the same bike I had 12 years ago. Its hard to wheel and deal from the island, so I'll probably let it go, but if someone wants an MX'er to fiddle with, I can't express how much fun this bike is to ride. For less than $550, it would be a good deal.

Calirider08, I paid 60.00 more than I should have . It ws 560.00 not including time and gas to go get it. It was about 8-9 hours from here over in Oregon. Has a good engine that is running strong and starts cold on about the 3-4 TDC kick. Downfall is it has a poor maintanance history. First thing was a new air filter, footpeg mountbolts, rear wheel bearings, front brake caliper rebuild. And it will soon need a new rear sprocket and tire. A lot more work than I thought it would be, but it runs good. Just lots of little projects to do on it. You might look on cycletrader.com or on the wheeldeals.com and search all publications. Thats how I found this one. |

SVandal, 8-9 hours! We got a really good deal on ours I suppose. $790 for a clean running, non leaking '83. The tires are pretty chewed up but thats all I can think of. It came with an extra front and rear wheel, a shock spring, fork springs, and shop manuals, the bike was located 30 minutes away. I don't think I will ever get a deal like that again.
It was worth it just to see the look on our neighbors faces when my friend and I started the bikes up. And then when the stupid sophmores 2 doors over said "Is that a Harley!?!?" So my friend said "yeah, c'mon over, we'll show you them." They declined. Later, Tom |

you should try the bike market around here. If you are trying to spend less than 1000.00 good luck finding something bigger than a 50. Also the 8 hour trip turned into a family vacation over to the coast. My wife wasnt going to miss a trip over there. So it all works out. I just got back from a test ride of the rebuilt front caliper and rear wheel bearings. Does anyone else have a problem with bottem end sluggishness? If I open it wide open, it doesnt accelerate very fast, but if I go into it smooth, it takes off faster. kinda funny. Any ideas? Thanks Stan Oh, Kyle, for a speedo, try a mnt bike one. that is what I use, and they are fine. If you get the nice 50.00 ones, I believe the refresh is quicker and they are very accurate, just ask your mnt bike dealer about it. Also check ebay, search motorcycles under xr500 or xr 500 I think there is a 350 one that is going, should fit the 500, check with bike bandit for sure. Good luck. |

| by headgasket, are you talking about the gasket between the head and cylinder that provides compression? Or the one between the head and the valve cover that seals in the oil? Or the one between the base of the cylinder and the engine cases? I have seen oil leak out of the last two, if the head gasket(compression) is leaking you will be loosing a lot of power. The only way that I know of that I would trust is to replace them. I wouldnt use oil additives on a bike, they might cause more trouble than they are worth. You should probably ask a shop about using them. |

I got an 80' XR500 in 1996 had been garaged for over 12 years for $600 and a helmet. I have used and abused though. Best deal I ever got. It had no dents until I toppled it over in the truck going down a dirt road. Replaced the original rubber and pipe. Got a supertrapp and manufactured a down pipe to the header pipes all for only $120 bucks. Cheapest exhaust system around, & I'll tell you what, even more power. I call it the tractor. It motors up stuff my 02' 400 has problems with. I love that bike. will never sell it. Skinny chicks and 13 year old boys are able to ride that beast. It sits low with the dual shocks and all. It does need something done to the front forks though. What I dont know. It is just a little easy to compress. Not uneven just easy. I had problems finding a 23" front tire for it.
What's the deal with the front forks are they known to need rebuilding? |
