Did your XL have an oil cooler to run that many miles? I'm glad you coughed up the change for a new cam chain. |

| my 83 xl600 was bone stock except i put a one size bigger pilot jet and clutch plates around 60,000.the thing ran perfect all the way till the shifter shaft snapped off!i also used castrol gtx car oil the whole time too. i use it in my xrl but i think i might have done a little damage when i ran 20-50 in it for awhile, it started rattling after that. i only run the 10-40 now. |

what you do is grab the chain on one end and see how much it bends or arches, I'll check the service limit for you unless you have a manual. |

Thay's amazing with no air wings or cooler, I think the XRL will go that far if you use the 5/40 rotella T syn.

| procycletech, yea it would run longer with better oil but i'm so cheap and i have 6 more cases of castrol 10-40 to burn up! do you think i should change it sooner that every 1,000 miles? i used to change it between 500 and 750 miles but i have been doing it every 1,000 for the last few years.hope my parts come in the next few days! |

I think 1000 miles would be max mileage using the GTX car oil or any oil for that matter. The problem with these bikes is the low oil capacity, that's where another oil tank would be nice that would hold 2 or 3 more qts of oil. You could install it like you did your spare fuel tank you built back where the battery once was. The plumbing would be easy, no different than hooking up an oil cooler. If you remember, the old Yamaha xt600's had an oil tank located in the back of the bike like that. I'm building a low pipe for my new bike so I'm going to put my oil tank where the old muffler was located and plumb it like you would an oil cooler. What keeps oil cool is flow, the more the oil is pushed and kept moving the more the oil cools.Have you ever tried to boil running water? The GB500's and XBR600 RFVC motors all have oil tanks. |

I don't think it matters how much oil is in the system, because the pump is blind to the volume it's pumping ... it just keeps on pumping at the same rate no matter how much oil is fed into it. I think the only way you'd put more strain on the pump would be to add a significant amount of larger diameter oil line to the bike. |

Take a look at the Buells oiling system, the swingarm is the oil tank which is pretty darn trick in my book.

Make sure you inspect your head for cracks around the spark plug hole and valve seats. |

| i got my parts back today and was ready to reasemble then............. the honda shop ordered everything for a xr650R!man what next! i got the honda shop to overnight the right parts so i should have them friday. my cam sure had some weird wear, the tops of the lobes had pits and holes in them and messed up the exhaust rockers? the intake lobes just started to get the pits on the tips. what would cause that? im going to take the decompressor unit apart and inspect that too since i can shake it around and rattle it. |

Lack of oil and zddp is what galls the camshaft. You need to drill the top banjo bolt like the bottom one. If you look at the parts # on a RS600 HRC motor they use the same bolt top and bottom, on a xrl the top one only has a pin hole in it. |
