4Strokes.com Technical: Make Your Own Dirt Bike Frame Guards

Frame Guard, Right Side   Frame Guard, Left SideAluminum Frame Guards by mpigg

These are my aluminum frame guards that I made for my Honda XR650L but they can be made and adapted to most any model dirtbike or dual-sport motorcycle. The tools I used were tin snips, rubber mallet, drill, pop-rivet gun and a few pop-rivets. I made the frame guards out of sheet aluminum that cost me about $5.00 (USD) and it took me about an hour to make the set of two.

These are my very inexpensive homemade frame guards. They are much cheaper than factory or aftermarket metal frame guards. They work very well and do not rust in almost any weather conditions. Have fun making your own!

  1. First cut a piece of paper to the shape of area to be covered and make any holes for swingarm bolts and such.
  2. Trace the pattern onto a piece of 5mm thick tough rubber meant for the soles of shoes (pictured). This material cost me about $3.00 SGD ($1.84 USD). Other materials that can be used: traction decal (rough textured sticker meant for skateboards), thick neoprene, or anything else you can find that you may work. Anthony has also made full-length frame guards.
  3. Cut out the shape using scissors or a sharp knife.
  4. Use cable ties (zip ties) to attach the new guard to the frame. Make sure it does not get in the way of moving parts.
