Topic: Raced my 81 XR80 (w/XR100 engine) on Sunday - Pics

I raced for the first time on Sunday at Sandhill in Brentwood , Calif., with my 1981 xr80 with a xr100 stock engine, it had a uni air filter and DG down megaphone pipe. I wanted to race the 16-39 100/125 beginner class but they combined the beginner and expert classes. There were 9 bikes in the class. All were newer CRF 100's,TTR 125's and Suzuki 125's. Some had big bore kits. We raced 2 motos. 1st moto I got 2nd place. 2nd moto I got 3rd place. In the 2nd moto I pulled the hole shot and led the whole field for almost a lap. Can you imagine a old xr leading a pack of newer bikes ? I got 2nd overall in my class and got a "king of sand hill" medal. I was on the podium. I was stoked !!. Next year Im going big bore and upgrading my suspension but still gonna run the old xr. I was the only bike there with a points ignition. People were looking at me like I was Captain Insano. Cant wait to do it again.

that's awesome! i always love hearing when the 'underdogs' do well. i'm not saying you as a rider are an underdog, but your bike would be considered one compared to those crf's and ttr's. awesome to hear!

That is sweet to hear man. I dont think the motor's have changed all that much over the years except for the ignition systems. But the difference in suspension should be quite noticeable. I blew through a corner on the inside of a 2003 Yamaha R1 on my 1983 GS750 Katana. The guy couldn't believe what just happened to him. What some bikes lack in modern technology we make up for with enthusiasm. Good job man.
